Artist’s Statement

Daily, for decades, I’ve drawn sketches of the men who've caught my eye whilst being transported by trains. A select few of these drawings have served as the source inspirations of paintings. I'm a custodian of my own curiosity and an explorer of the human honesty solely inherent in un-posed anonymity.

My Process

I have derived each portrait from personal observations recorded during my daily commute in initial sketches of strangers sitting across from me on the train in New York City. Clearly, my interpretation of each subject is manifested in the painterly expression of my subjects and the juxtaposition of abstract elements within each composition. I feel it is important to express the point of departure made in the evolution of each painting which is what I hope to accomplish in each work of origin. -Dane LaChiusa
